Waynesville NC to Host Folkmoot USA July 16-26, 2009
The official International Festival held in the mountains of North Carolina known as Folkmoot USA will be held in Waynesville, NC July 16-26, 2009. This is a two week celebration demonstrating the world's cultural heritage through folk dance and music. Folkmoot while in the mountains of Western North Carolina will have parades and workshops with at least 350 performers from twelve or more countries. Demonstrations of cultural heritage through original costume reproduction, dance, and great music.
Countries that are expected to participate include Israel, Spain, Kenya, Romania, Italy, Netherlands, Geogia, Greece, Serbia, and India. The event which is centered in Waynesville NC will also take place in Maggie Valley, Lake Junaluska, Clyde, Canton, Bryson City, Highlands, Cullowhee, Asheville, Burnsville, Columbus, Marion, Mars Hills, Flat Rock, and Franklin.
The 4th annual Folkmoot USA 5k race is scheduled for July 18, 2009. Last years race became an International event although the top three finishers were local area runners. First place went to Ben Crenshaw from Linville Falls, NC in 17:16, 2nd place finisher was Hector Sanchez, Canton, NC in 17:22, and 3rd place went to Adam Pinkston, Asheville, NC in 17:37. The race in 2008 had 244 runners which was a 40% (!) increase from 2007 so the popularity of this event appears to be increasing.
The Folkmoot Festival Parade Of Nations is scheduled for July 17, 2009 at 1:00 PM. International Festival Day is July 25 from 10-5 PM with crafts and entertainment.
