Fines Creek North Carolina was formed from Crabtree in 1850 and is in the northern part of Haywood County. The community takes its name from the creek that is within the valley of Fines Creek and has a size of about one hundred square miles. Fines Creek was once known as Crystal Creek and later was known as Twelve Mile Creek because of its length. This was an incorrect measurement and the name was changed to Fines Creek about a hundred years ago. Fines Creek was named after Peter Fines. Peter Fines fought under John Sevier at King's Mountain. Peter Fines had lived across the mountains in Tennessee and when some Indians had stolen some of his horses, Peter, went after to get his horses back. Peter was killed in the process and Fines Creek was named in his honor.
