The Township of Clyde, NC was created in 1877 from Beaverdam, Pigeon, and Waynesville which are nearby  communities. The original name for this town was "Lower Pigeon" and was later changed to Clyde which at the time was a small town on the banks of the Pigeon River.

The most recent census in 2000 has the population at 1,324 people and it is located in the Asheville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The 1,324 people include 547 households and 373 families. This is a density of 1579.2 people per square mile. The 547 households had 29.3% children under the age of 18, 51.6% married couples living together, 12.8% female head of the household with no husband present, 31.8% were non families. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family was 2.82.

Clyde, NC is the location for Haywood County North Carolina's only institution of higher education, Haywood Community College. This also the location of Haywood Community College Arboretum. Clyde, NC is the location for the Shook Museum, Shook-Smathers House,  where it is believe to be the oldest known frame house in the Western North Carolina area.
