Beaverdam North Carolina was one of the original precincts (townships) in Haywood County, NC and was originally part of nearby Buncombe County. The traditional belief that the name "Beaverdam" came from the creek within its boundary that beavers had been building dams in. Clyde township was later created when Beaverdam township was broken into a smaller area. Beaverdam is currently about forty square miles. All water in Haywood county drains out of the county and none runs into the county. All this water goes into the Pigeon River except the water from Beaverdam. The exception to this rule is the approximate sixteen square mile area in Beaverdam that goes into the North Hominy Creek which eventually goes into the French River in nearby Buncombe County.
